SUMMARY:First-of-a-Kind: PANYNJ Leverages Unique Investigate-Design-Build Delivery to Restore Salt Damage at World Trade Center
DESCRIPTION:During construction of the new World Trade Center (WTC) in 2012\, Hurricane Sandy inundated the worksite with 200M gallons of brackish water. The water was rapidly removed\, but the salt remained embedded\, causing damage across the iconic structure’s first decade of service life. The saltwater caused corrosion and service life reduction along the lowest levels of WTC approximately 70 feet below grade. \nBeginning in 2021\, the Port Authority of New York New Jersey (PANYNJ) embarked on a multi-year project aimed at remediating the damage and restoring structural capacity for WTC’s intended 100-year service life.  Based upon the varied extent-of-damage conditions which drove the need for extensive investigation as a first step\, PANYNJ’s desire for cost certainty and need to manage schedule constraints in a complex working environment\, design-build delivery was selected. \nFour Learning Objectives: \n\nDiscover the Owner’s evaluation of delivery methods process\, and analyze the decision criteria for use of design-build using the WTC project for reference\nTranslate PANYNJ’s extensive experience related to Design-Build for new construction of world class facilities into how to effectively manage and deliver Design-Build for rehabilitation projects\nAssess the risks presented on repair projects and how they are managed through strategic use of contingencies and allowances\, specifically for portions of scope that have variable quantities and potential scope changes based on variability or as-found conditions.\nAcquire knowledge regarding the benefits of Design-Build delivery to develop solutions and execute repair and restoration of existing structures.\n\nParticipants will be eligible for 1.5 DBIA credits. \n________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nRegistration Now\nAbout our Presenters \n \nJeff Binder\, DBIA | Director of Preconstruction\, Structural \nJeff Binder is Director of Preconstruction for STRUCTURAL with over 17 years of experience in the repair and restoration of concrete structures. Stay tuned for further updates! \nIf you have any questions or would like to request a refund\, don’t hesitate to contact Alison@dbianycmetro.org \n_______________________________________________________________________________________________ \nBuilding Information Modeling (BIM) is a tool or the model-based technologies that produce a building information model that enables a highly collaborative Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) process throughout a project’s lifecycle. When combined\, project teams can take advantage of a forward-thinking environment where the integration of people\, process and technology can thrive. The whole team approach inherent in Design-Build is an ideal environment for BIM/VDC to flourish (more than any other project delivery system)\, especially when you can take advantage of an integrated project team from the outset\, creating a platform for success\, where all the client’s goals can be embraced early. In addition to highlighting DBIA’s approach to VDC Done Right we’ll also hear from innovative VDC Leaders who will provide real-world examples of how VDC is driving value by enabling the merging of technology and project delivery to provide optimized outcomes for Owners. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nOutline how BIM/VDC can produce enhanced design excellence\, increased quality and productivity\, and improved lifecycle cost.\nUnderstand how real-time model-based collaboration can enable design-build teams to stay on budget and exceed schedule expectations.\nDefine the value of having a VDC Leader engaged in the early planning phase of the project.\nDescribe how a focus on digital deliverables and what the owner needs and when can provide value post-construction.\n\nEarn one (1) DBIA CEH credit. \n*Food and refreshments will be served. \n________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nRegister Now\n________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nSPONSORED BY\n \n  \n \n________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nMeet the Panelists\nIan Carney\, AIA\nSenior Virtual Design and Construction Manager – New England\nGilbane Building Company\n \nIan Carney is a Sr. VDC Manager at Gilbane and a registered architect in Massachusetts. Ian previously worked as a carpenter and furniture builder with a focus on digital fabrication and computational design. Mr. Ioanna founded Syska Innovations with the original intent of investing in seed-stage companies and piloting their software and products. Over time\, he expanded the initiative to foster ideation and technological\ndevelopment within Syska while driving his team to remain at the forefront of developments in artificial intelligence and related\ntechnologies. \n  \n \nSal D’Ambrosia\nDirector of Construction Technology\nWm. Blanchard Co. \nSal D’Ambrosia is Director of Construction Technology at Wm. Blanchard\, where he leads virtual construction as an operational driver\, not a support function. With more than 20 years of field experience combined with another 20 years in virtual construction\, he focuses on aligning design intent with real world execution. Sal advocates for design build teams that treat the model as a jobsite tool\, driving coordination\, accountability\, and smarter decisions earlier. A national speaker and industry voice\, he challenges silos and pushes construction technology to serve the people building the work. \n___________________________________________________________\nMeet the Moderator\n Brian Skripac\, DBIA\, CM-BIM\, LEED AP\nDirector\, Virtual Design & Construction\nDesign-Build Institute of America \nBrian\, a Bachelor of Science in Architecture graduate from The Ohio State University\, is responsible for shaping how VDC brings optimal benefits to design-build’s “whole team” approach to project delivery. As a Digital Construction innovator\, Brian has spent the last 20 years of his career defining how people\, processes and technology come together to transform collaborative project delivery. In addition\, he leads the creation and advancement of best practices related to the integration of BIM-enabled technologies and other innovative digital tools to enhance design-build team performance and while generating significant lifecycle benefits for projects across the built environment. \n________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nFormat: In-Person \nIf you have any questions\, don’t hesitate to contact Education@dbia.org. \nLocation: Syska Hennessy 1185 Avenue of the Americas\, New York\, NY 10036
