STV is investing in the future of design-build delivery by training and certifying more than 30 professionals through an internal Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) education program—reinforcing the firm’s commitment to collaboration, delivery excellence and Design-Build Done Right®.
The initiative brings together professionals from across disciplines to prepare for DBIA certification while strengthening their understanding of integrated project delivery, risk allocation and team alignment—capabilities that are increasingly critical as design-build continues to play a central role in delivering complex infrastructure programs.
Rather than treating certification as an individual pursuit, STV structured the DBIA training as an internal program designed to establish a shared foundation across teams. For Bob Rusciano, business development director at STV, the value of the program was in aligning design, construction and owner priorities through a shared framework for collaboration and risk management.
“Design‑build delivers its greatest value when it’s led by people who truly understand the delivery method model,” said Iris Giboyeaux, VP and director of operations for the transportation north group at STV. “Providing DBIA education internally helps ensure our project managers across disciplines are equipped to manage risk and share a common understanding of best practices —so teams are better aligned and prepared to deliver for owners.”
That shared understanding is central to DBIA certification, which emphasizes not just technical knowledge, but a mindset that supports trust, accountability and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams.
“DBIA certification represents more than a credential—it’s a shared language and mindset that elevates how teams collaborate and deliver,” said Jim Murphy, SVP and national development director of program management and construction management group at STV and chair of the Membership and Sponsorship Committee for the DBIA NYC Metro Chapter. “By training and certifying professionals internally, firms can strengthen their ability to deliver value to clients while advancing the principles that define successful design-build delivery.”
For participants, the program offered immediate, practical takeaways they can apply on current and future projects. “I was excited to participate in the DBIA training and deepen my understanding of design-build,” said Matt Gillis, senior engineer at STV. “The program connected best practices to real-world delivery, and I’m already thinking about how to apply those lessons on future design-build projects.”
By investing in DBIA education and certification, STV is developing the next generation of design-build leaders—professionals who understand that successful delivery depends not only on contracts and processes, but on people working together with shared accountability.
